01 April, 2026 11:10

Karachi — The city administration has officially increased milk prices, raising the retail rate by Rs20 per litre from April 2026. According to the latest notification, the new price of milk has been fixed at Rs240 per litre.

Officials confirmed that dairy farmers will now receive Rs215 per litre, while wholesalers will pay Rs225 per litre. The revised pricing structure aims to balance fair compensation for producers while ensuring consistent supply in the market.

The new rates have come into effect immediately, meaning consumers across Karachi will now have to pay higher prices for daily milk purchases. The increase is expected to impact household budgets, especially amid rising inflation.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s weekly inflation, measured through the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), recorded an increase of 0.97% for the week ending March 26, 2026.

Data shows that prices of several essential items surged significantly. Onions saw an increase of 18.10%, tomatoes rose by 11.38%, LPG by 10.05%, and chicken by 8.70%. Other items like potatoes, electricity charges, eggs, garlic, mutton, and beef also registered noticeable hikes.

On the other hand, some relief was observed in a few commodities. Prices of bananas dropped by 4.50%, wheat flour decreased by 1.00%, while sugar, gur, and certain pulses also recorded slight declines.

Out of 51 essential items tracked under SPI, prices of 23 items increased, 6 decreased, and 22 remained stable during the week. On a yearly basis, inflation has risen by 8.24%, reflecting continued pressure on consumers.

The latest milk price hike adds to the growing cost of living concerns, as households across the country continue to face rising expenses on basic necessities.
